Adhan Not Playing on My Phone: Fix Guide for Android (Samsung, Xiaomi, Tecno) and iPhone
Many people who use an adhan reminder complain that on some days, or after a few days, the adhan does not play. The cause is usually not the app itself but the phone manufacturer stopping background apps to save battery, or a permission being turned off. This guide explains the most common causes of the problem and the steps to fix it on Android and iPhone.
Menu names vary by brand, model and software version; the steps below are meant as a guide. Adhan apps are recorded reminders that do not replace the adhan called at the mosque.
Common checks first
- Are the phone's time and time zone set to automatic? A wrong clock shifts all reminders.
- Is the app's notification permission on? Check it under Settings > Apps (or Notifications).
- Is the sound of the adhan notification channel on, and is the right sound selected?
- Is the phone in silent, vibrate or Do Not Disturb (Focus) mode? These modes can mute notification sounds.
- Volume level: Remember that notification and alarm volume levels can be different. Check the relevant slider in the phone's sound settings.
- On some phones, swiping the app away from the recent apps list stops it. Reopen the app and check the adhan settings.
Android: why doesn't the adhan play?
For reminders that must sound at a specific time, such as the adhan, Android offers a special mechanism called "exact alarms". This mechanism requires a user permission (Alarms & reminders). According to the Android documentation, if the permission is revoked, the app is stopped and its future exact alarms are cancelled.
Android can also restrict unused apps to save battery. There are limits such as an app that falls into the restricted bucket being able to set only one alarm a day. The complaint "it breaks after a few days" mostly stems from this. In Android 15, when an app is force-stopped, the system cancels all pending alarms; the adhans are not scheduled until the app is opened again.
- Settings > Apps > [App] > Battery: choose "Unrestricted" or "Don't optimize".
- Settings > Apps > Special access > Alarms & reminders: allow the app.
- Keep notifications on and check the sound of the adhan channel.
- Do not let booster, cleaner or "phone manager" apps terminate this app.
- Even if you don't use the phone for a while, open the app now and then; some manufacturers put apps that haven't been opened for a long time to sleep.
Samsung (One UI)
Samsung can put unused apps to sleep after three days; unused apps may be put into deep sleep after about 16 days (Samsung Developers documentation; durations may vary). An app in deep sleep cannot perform any activity, including notifications.
- Settings > Apps > [App] > Battery > Unrestricted.
- Settings > Battery > Background usage limits > add the app to the Never sleeping apps list.
- Turn off the "Put unused apps to sleep" setting.
- On the app info page, turn off the "Pause app activity if unused" option.
- Allow it under Settings > Apps > Special access > Alarms & reminders.
Xiaomi, Redmi, POCO (HyperOS / MIUI)
On Xiaomi phones, autostart and battery saver settings are especially important. Clearing the recent apps screen can terminate the app process.
- Settings > Apps > Manage apps > [App] > Autostart: on.
- On the same page, Battery saver: "No restrictions".
- Under Other permissions, grant "Show on lock screen" and "Display pop-up windows while running in the background".
- On the recent apps screen, pull the app card down to lock it.
Tecno, Infinix (HiOS)
On these brands the power-saving app can be strict enough to freeze apps while the screen is off. Menu names vary by version.
- Settings > Battery (Battery Lab) > Battery saver settings > turn off power-saving management for the app.
- Phone Master > Toolbox > Autostart management: allow the app.
- Lock the app on the recent apps screen.
- Turn off options such as "Block push when screen is off" and sleep-mode optimization.
Other brands
| Brand | Setting to change |
|---|---|
| Oppo, Realme, OnePlus | App management > Battery usage: allow background activity and autostart; "optimize battery usage" off; lock in recent apps. |
| Huawei, Honor | Battery > App launch > turn off "Manage automatically" for the app and turn on autostart, secondary launch and run in background. |
| Vivo | Allow it under Battery > Background power consumption management; turn on the autostart option. |
| Google Pixel | App battery usage > Unrestricted (only if needed); Alarms & reminders on. |
The brand steps are general paths described by manufacturers and community documentation; they may differ depending on the interface version.
iPhone (iOS)
On iPhone, adhan reminders usually work as local notifications. Notification sounds cannot be longer than 30 seconds; if a longer sound is chosen, the system plays the default notification sound. For this reason, short excerpts rather than the full-length adhan are expected on iOS. In addition, an app can schedule at most 64 pending local notifications.
- Settings > Notifications > [App]: Allow Notifications on; Sounds on.
- Check the Ring/Silent switch: notification sounds may not play while it is on silent.
- In a Focus mode (Do Not Disturb, Sleep and so on), add the app to the list of allowed apps or allow time-sensitive notifications.
- Keep the app up to date; after major iOS updates, review the notification settings again.
If it still doesn't play
First restart the phone, then open the app and play the test sound in the adhan settings. If the problem continues, send the app's support team your brand, model and software version. For reminders, instead of relying only on the phone's clock and permissions, you might also consider setting a backup alarm on important days (especially suhoor and iftar in Ramadan). Frequently asked questions
Why does the adhan stop playing after a few days on a Samsung phone?
Samsung can put unused apps to sleep. Setting the app to Battery > Unrestricted and adding it to the Never sleeping apps list reduces this problem.
Which permissions are needed for adhan notifications on a Xiaomi phone?
Autostart must be on, battery saver set to "No restrictions", and the Show on lock screen and background pop-up permissions granted; you can also lock the app on the recent apps screen.
Why is the adhan sound short on iPhone?
iOS notification sounds can be at most 30 seconds; with longer sounds, the default notification sound plays instead. For this reason, adhans that play as notifications are short excerpts.
